Healthy hair has an intact cuticle that is closed and resembles a young pine cone. It protects the inside of the hair, reflects the light, and makes the hair shine particularly beautifully. External factors – such as cold in winter and heat in summer – permanently attack this protective layer. This causes the hair to lose moisture. The result: you get dry hair. Julia Roberts once revealed in an interview why, unlike many other women, she doesn’t have to deal with the problem of ” dry hair “: she only washes her hair every 14 days! Can it really be that simple? We tell you the ways of taking care of your dry hair and scalp which can help you dry hair outshine.
What dry hair needs?
Taking care of your dry hair and scalp is as essential as taking care of your face. Warm and dry heating air, as well as the cold wind in winter, too hot blow-drying and straightening or too frequent washing and coloring, are the main causes of dry hair. Because they remove a lot of moisture from the hair. Moisture is particularly important for the hair to stay healthy.
The result: our hair hangs flat and feels unhealthy. Women with curly hair in particular often have dry hair – and not just in winter.
If your hair lacks shine, it looks dull and straw-like, your hair and scalp are certainly too dry. A scalp that is too dry can also be noticed by itching the scalp or by dry dandruff. However, dry hair is not the same as damaged hair.
With dry hair, the layers of the hair remain intact. In contrast to dry hair, damaged hair shows chemical changes (for example through tinting, coloring or bleaching) in the top layers of the hair. The core of damaged hair is generally porous and no longer resistant.
To prevent dry hair and to care for it properly, intensive hair care is required, special care for dry hair. Therefore, make sure that you choose the right products for your problem.
Mild shampoos, moisturizers, and hair treatments for dry hair are a first approach to getting beautiful and healthy hair.

Causes of Dry Hair
The causes of dry hair and dry scalp are quickly explained: the sebum glands on the head produce too little and, in particularly severe cases, no more sebum.
This can have several causes:
- Dry heating air
- Direct, long-lasting sun exposure on the head
- Blow drying too long
- Frequent use of a flat iron or curling iron
- Use of aggressive shampoos and/or soaps
- Washing your hair too often
- Too hot water when washing your hair
Rarely dry hair and dry scalp and symptoms of diseases such as hypothyroidism or the eating disorder anorexia nervosa can also be the reasons.
The consequences of dry hair and dry scalp
If very dry hair or a too dry scalp is not treated with the right care products, the consequences can be serious. Therefore, you should take the symptoms seriously and do something about them: Moisture for the hair is now the order of the day!
If the dry scalp is not treated, split ends, the formation of dry scales, and, in the worst case, even hair loss are at risk.
If the sebum glands stop producing sebum, the protective acid mantle of the scalp is also at risk. The sebum provides an acidic environment on the skin, which is able to kill bacteria and viruses. If the hair lacks moisture on the scalp, the skin can become cracked and brittle and pathogens can penetrate the skin unhindered.
TAKING CARE MADE EASY: DIY REMEDY FOR DRY HAIR
You can quickly and easily do a cure for dry hair yourself with everyday kitchen ingredients. Above all, this helps to get very dry hair under control in winter. Try it!
Make moisturizing hair treatment yourself
You need:
150g plain yogurt
1 beaten egg
2 tbsp jojoba oil
1 tsp honey
2 drops of wheat germ oil
The lecithin in the egg protects your hair and prevents further drying out. The milk protein in the yogurt provides intensive moisture.
Apply the hair treatment 1-2 times a week for an optimal effect.
That’s how it’s done:
Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl and mix well with a fork. Now warm up the hair treatment in the microwave for a few seconds. But it shouldn’t get too hot, otherwise, the protein will falter!
Then apply the cure evenly to the hair lengths and tips using a brush. These should still be slightly damp because the ingredients are absorbed particularly well.
Then wrap a transparent film around your head, because then the hair mask will work even more intense. Alternatively, you can also use a plastic hood or sit in a hot bath. You can also wrap a towel around the film – this enhances the effect.
Leave the hair treatment on for about 10 minutes, then simply wash it off with shampoo. Your dry hair is then going to look luscious and healthy.
Natural home remedies for dry hair
In addition to egg, honey, yogurt, jojoba, and wheat germ oil, tea tree oil helps to keep dry hair healthy again. Because it regulates the activity of the sebum glands. Simply add two to three drops to your moisturizing shampoo and wash your hair in the usual way.
Also, olive oil is a known home remedy for dry hair. After washing, part your hair with a comb into a center parting. Now gently rub the olive oil into your hair from top to bottom.
Then wrap a towel around your head and let the oil work for at least three hours. Then rinse the olive oil with a mild shampoo.
Another helpful remedy is beer, which you simply use as a hair conditioner. Let it take effect for a short time and rinse thoroughly so that the typical beer smell evaporates again. The contained substances give your hair a beautiful silky shine.
These natural care products not only make your hair wonderfully smooth, but they also prevent further drying out!
Applying a hair mask full of protein would make your hair better from outside but in order to make it grow healthily from inside you need to add protein diet in your day to day diet plans.
THE RIGHT CARE FOR DRY HAIR
The very first essential thing you need to do about taking care of your dry hair and scalp is to make the right choice for shampoo and conditioner. But you should be very careful while choosing beforehand.
Shampoo for dry hair
When choosing the right care products, you should make sure to choose a shampoo that contains little drying foam. But it should contain a lot of silicones that promote good combability.
In addition, your shampoo against dry hair should have nourishing oils and moisturizing ingredients, because dry hair, in contrast to damaged hair, has dried out from the root to the tip.
Damaged hair, on the other hand, is usually split ends and fragile only at the ends. These differences play a big role in choosing the right shampoo.
Dry hair lacks a healthy and balanced production of sebum, which keeps the hair supple and soft. That is why you need a shampoo that covers the hair with valuable oils, on the one hand, thus protecting it from further drying out and on the other hand moisturizing.
Shampoo for Dry Scalp
Do you have an itchy scalp that is flaky and dry? The reasons for this are similar to those of dry hair.
Stress, climate, or yeast can also be blamed for dandruff.
Women should use a shampoo with micelle technologies for thorough cleaning of the scalp. The micelle technology removes impurities and residues effectively while maintaining the natural balance of hair and scalp. The formula is also free of silicones, parabens, and dyes and thus protects the natural pH balance of the scalp. Shampoos with micelle technologies cleanse gently without irritating the scalp.
Moisture Rinsing
Moisture washes pull the hair together due to their relatively acidic pH value, which is particularly useful for dry hair. Because dry hair has a rough, open cuticle layer that is very vulnerable.
Ideally, however, it should be closed so that external factors cannot damage the hair. Flushes manage to close these open cracks. There are few hair rinse products containing milk in the market which are suitable for damaged and dry hair, these are made for these kinds of hair. They nourish the hair with milk proteins and repair the hair in depth.
Grooming Dry Dair – Tips & Tricks
In addition to proper hair care, there are a few tips and tricks to keep in mind to combat dry hair:
Avoid hot blow-drying, straightening, and curling. The selective heat exposure dries out the hair and makes it brittle quickly since the natural cuticle layer is attacked. Let your hair air dry as often as possible and use heat protection.
Use alcohol-free styling products. Because this dries out the hair heavily.
Avoid washing your hair too often. This also dries out the scalp and promotes the formation of dandruff. The scalp may also be extremely itchy and inflamed. Wash your hair as rarely as possible and as often as necessary! Always wash with lukewarm water, because hot water leaches the hair.
Brush your hair with natural instead of metal bristle brushes. These distribute the sebum better in the hair and do not roughen the cuticle layer.
Massage your scalp regularly. This promotes blood circulation and stimulates sebum production.
